Mini Edit Mama is a series of interviews with the women who inspire us most. Join us as we sit down with the mums we love, from famous faces, to friends, family and the women who’ve built our business.
Jessica Neil ( @theminiedit )
The original Mini Edit Mama, our founder Jess, tells us about life behind the scenes at TME HQ and how life has changed since the brand was born nearly four years ago.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
Hastings, down on the East Sussex coast. We reloctaed from London just before Isaac was born last year.
My husband and business partner Anton, our two kids Izzy (2) and Isaac (7 months), our frug Nala and her arch nemesis Simba the cat
WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE?
Alexandra Park, which is the dreamy park across the road from our house / office
WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT?
Snoh Aalegra (Sometimes), Raveena (If Only and Milk & Honey) and Eliza (Wasn't Looking) on repeat and the Success Stories podcast by Sheer Luxe
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST GUILTY PLEASURE?
Sugar... all the sugar, all the time! I'm into the hard stuff... meringues, candy floss, fizzy laces, it's an actual problem.
WHAT’S IN YOUR HANDBAG TODAY?
Considering I run a digital business I keep it old school and always carry a Smythson diary and notebook, then I've got my iPhone, a giant bundle of keys with my purse attached so I can't lose it, Chanel lip balm, a gold bic biro, poo bags for the dog and baby wipes for my snotty kids.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION?
Probably my rings because of what they represent, my engagement ring is a 1920's beauty that Anton and I trawled about 50 million vintage jewellers to find (we've been together since we were kids and it took him 10 long years to propose), it's a bit like our relationship, imperfect and a bit much, but beautiful to me, and then on the other hand a huge gold knot ring by Englebert Stockholm that I got as an early treat for my 30th.
WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE PERSON ON THE GRAM?
Nearly impossible to pick one person but, Susie Verill ( @susiejverill ) is bloody hilarious and one of the few people who genuinely makes me laugh out loud. She doesn't seem to give many fucks what people think either, which makes me like her even more.
WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
Somewhere between ghetto fab and CEO, if I had to summarise my style in one outfit it would be mum jeans, a lacy cami, a blazer, trainers and OTT gold jewellery.
WHO’S YOUR STYLE ICON?
It's a toss up between my number one mum boss crush Anine Bing ( @aninebing ) and my number one woman crush Stacey Dooley ( @sjdooley )
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?
Healthy, financially stable, dripping in chunky gold jewelery and surrounded by my babies and their babies and their babies.
WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF CAREERS ADVICE YOU WISH YOU’D BEEN GIVEN?
When working for someone else - Treat each role like a project, do it to the best of your ability, learn as much as you can and then when you've stopped benefiting from it, move on to the next project. When working for yourself - never, ever give up, it isn't supposed to be easy or everyone would be doing it, so stop wishing for the things you want and get your head down and work for them.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE MUM HACK OR KEY PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN?
Whatever works, parenting is hard, kids are exhausting, just do whatever works for you and don't give yourself a hard time, oh and maybe to put vaseline all over your baby's butt as soon as they're born so the first evil tar poop wipes straight off!
WHAT’S THE WORST DECISION YOU’VE EVER MADE?
I'm not sure that I have any regrets. Don't get me wrong, I've made some almighty mistakes in my time, but I'm really happy at the minute and am not sure I'd be here without all the wrong turns along the way.
WHAT’S YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?
Hands down my babies, they annoy me and exhaust me, but they're so bloody delicious and amazing that I often can't believe they're anything to do with me
WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?
My mum, she's just such an incredible woman, she manages to be so warm and nurturing, but also fierce and strong and brave and independent, she's the actual best.
WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT?
Nothing, running a business with two under two is flipping exhausting, when they are asleep I am asleep!
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU TODAY?
