The Mini Edit Meets – Lucy Brice

LUCY BRICE @ruffandhuddle

CO-FOUNDER OF RUFF AND HUDDLE

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

Bristol.

WHO WITH?

Rufus and Hudson, my two little sidekicks who give me endless inspiration for Ruff and Huddle, their names-sake.

IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD IT BE?

On a beach somewhere, where the boys could run around with bare sandy bums and that has good Wi-Fi.

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT?

A Prosumer mix on Soundcloud from last years Electric Elephant festival, gorgeous sunny sounds.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST GUILTY PLEASURE?

Being driven around! I come up with any excuse I can not to drive as I love being a passenger. It gives me the chance to be still and daydream and listen to music whilst the kids are strapped into their seats in the back, ideally not scrapping.

WHAT’S IN YOUR HANDBAG TODAY?

Some lego blocks, Lightening McQueen, Eight Hour Cream, my phone, bankcard, a tape measure, Paracetamol, swimming goggles, hair bobbles and a squashed banana.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION?

I bought an Acne Leather Jacket as a present to myself after Rufus was born, six years later and it’s still going strong.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

Dragged through a hedge backwards chic, messy hair, light make-up, trainers du jour, ‘polishes up well’ when needed.

WHO’S YOUR STYLE ICON?

Ali MacGraw, boringly Kate Moss and more often than not women I pass in the street and think look good.

WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE HAD TOLD YOU ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

Get your books in order. After doing all the fun stuff like working on designs, photo shoots and marketing, probably the trickiest thing for me is making sure our accounts are in order. I highly recommend Sage. I’d also like to dispel the myth that when you’re your own boss you have more time. It is true in a sense, as I am able to be there for school drop offs and collections, but I’ve never been so busy in my life. I generally burn the midnight oil working. It does feel very humbling seeing all your hard work materialising into something real, the first store which stocks your brand, or the first kid you pass in the street wearing one of your jackets make the sleep deprivation work while.

WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE HAD TOLD YOU ABOUT HAVING KIDS?

Oh tricky one – I’m not sure where to start! I was the first of all my friends to have children so I went into motherhood completely clear headed and excited with no real horror stories. It was a huge shock for sure. That moment when you take a brand new baby home from hospital and you think ‘what do I do now?’ I think you learn quickly and the whole experience is as unique as the individuals are. All the hard work is balanced out by the abundance of love I get from my boys.

WHAT’S YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

Launching Ruff and Huddle at Selfridges.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?

My Mum, who ran her family business for 30 years and single handedly raised my brother and I with never faulting grace and patience.

WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT?

Work, deadlines, social media and two little boys.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU TODAY?

Well, I made some blinds for Rufus’ bedroom so I’m off to buy some wooden rods to hang them, whilst thinking about AW16 which I’m beginning to design. The focus is lux fabrics and loop back sweats mixed with applique and quilting, this is my favourite stage in the season.

AND THIS YEAR?

Hopefully a holiday!

I was the first of all my friends to have children so I went into motherhood completely clear headed and excited with no real horror stories. It was a huge shock for sure.
